More than 6,000 historic tapes from American Samoa’s public broadcasting station, KVZK TV, are at risk of being lost forever. These recordings document decades of island life, including local news, graduations, cultural festivals, religious ceremonies, and more, told in both Samoan and English. With no funding for storage or digitization, decades of history could disappear. In 1966, Joyce Chen became the first woman of color to host a nationally-syndicated instructional cooking show when the GBH-produced "Joyce Chen Cooks" premiered on PBS. Six years later, Chen wanted American audiences to see more than just her Peking ravioli recipe — she wanted them to see her native homeland.
